The Gift Certificate
We left at The Trial in our previous post on Vanilla Cheesecake. The horrors to be faced by Hank Rearden were far from over. He knew there will be consequences of his speech.
He got the answer in form of a Directive passed by the government. This directive called for a voluntary donation of all solo rights on production and distribution of his metal, as a Gift Certificate, to the government. His metal, his effort of ten long years, was now to be produced by anyone and everyone.
This was not acceptable to him and he refused to entertain any representative from the government for as long as possible.
But alas, he couldn’t save himself from this unjust annihilation. One representative arrived with a very powerful weapon, against which he had no defense. The weapon was his secret love affair with Dagny Taggart, which would have been made public if he had refused to co-operate. He signed the certificate as a penance for the grave mistake he did two years ago.
According to him, the mistake was to keep his love hidden from the world, thereby accepting the moral code of looters and giving them leverage over him. His mistake was to give high precedence to feelings of a wife who never loved him. His wife was the one who sold him to his enemies. His wife was the one who took away the only important thing in his life from him.
What happened afterward to Rearden and Dagny? Did Rearden left his mills and disappeared like others? Who is John Galt? Read the novel “Atlas Shrugged” by Ayn Rand to find out.
Sweet Potato Pudding
Sweet Potato Pudding or Shakarkandi ki kheer is a dessert made using Sweet Potato/Yams and milk. It is very easy and quick to make. We usually prepare it during our fasting days like Navratri’s.
This recipe is one I learned from my mother-in-law. My husband loves it. And now me too. The taste of cooked sweet potato in milk with a tinge of sugar is very soothing to your taste buds and stomach. Each bite just melts instantly inside a mouth. It tastes yummier when eaten hot and fresh.
This dessert is not only luscious but also healthy. You satisfy your sweet tooth and don’t even gain weight. Sweet potato has a lot of good carbohydrates, fiber, pro-vitamins, vitamins B and C and manganese.
Boil the sweet potato in a pressure cooker(2 whistles) or in a pan(till it becomes soft). When it cools down. Peel the skin off and grate it.
Slowly add milk and whisk until paste forms. Continue adding milk till you get the desired consistency. If you want the kheer to thicken then add less milk, or if more watery then add more milk.
Now switch on the flame to high and bring the mixture to boil. Keep whisking in between. When it starts boiling, reduce the flame, add cardamom and sugar. Let it simmer on medium flame for 5-10 minutes or till the mixture becomes a bit thick. Garnish with sliced almonds and cashew nuts and serve hot.
