My Thoughts On The Novel
This is my third novel from this author. Unlike the other two (A thousand splendid suns and The Kite Runner), I didn’t love this one.
The main story in the sea of stories narrated in this novel is of Pari and Abdullah. A brother and sister, who get separated in their childhood. Then went on to live full and complete lives separately until their reunion.
The author writes a good story, no doubt about it. He embeds the correct levels of emotions, drama, mystery in each story and character. But this time he introduces so many characters, each with their own storylines that it gets confusing. Almost every other chapter is a short story of one character. Some of these short stories are really short with no proper endings. Which leaves you dissatisfied and questioning. Why do we have to know the backstory of that doctor from Tinos? Or those brothers?
I lost interest when we went deep into the story of Abdullah’s step-uncle, Nabi. After that, I read the novel, only to finish it. Maybe if the story remained focused on the main characters, I would have enjoyed it more.
These are my thoughts. Others might love the novel. As every reader is different.
Do I recommend this novel? A tricky question for me. If you have read the other two novels, you will be tempted to read this one too like me. Maybe you will like it. Maybe not. If you will ask me, my immediate answer will definitely be no. Although I will say if you still make up your mind and read it. Then go ahead.
