Hi foodies,
Welcome back to next experiments in kitchen post, today it is Broccoli Tots.
Broccoli Tots
Ever since I saw this recipe for Healthy Baked Broccoli Tots on “GimmedeliciousFood“, I had wanted to try it. I had tasted the original tater tots made of potato at the restaurant but never the broccoli ones. While searching for a recipe for tots, I came across this broccoli tots recipe. And thought of trying this before trying the potato ones. I will definitely make the potato ones too, but that’s for later.
Broccoli tots are just like tater tots with broccoli instead of potatoes. The post, Healthy Baked Broccoli Tots, goes into detail about the healthiness of this recipe with the nutrition facts. Hop on to their recipe to get more details. This post shows my trial of their recipe.
Changes
I didn’t have the Italian Bread Crumbs, so I used only the normal Panko Bread Crumbs. I added an additional Italian Seasoning. And used white onion instead of a yellow one.
Let’s Begin
The first step is to blanch the broccoli florets. So, extracted all the florets from the broccoli I bought and kept them aside. Put a pan full of water to boil on the burner. Once the water started boiling, I added the broccoli florets and closed the burner. I let the broccoli boil in the water for two minutes. Then drained the florets using a strainer. Then washed the florets with cold water.
Once the florets were dry enough, I transferred them into my food processor. Pulsed till the florets were mashed (finely chopped).
Next, I transferred the mashed broccoli into a bowl. And added cheddar cheese, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, bread crumbs, egg, onions and parsley leaves. Mixed them well together to form a loose batter.
At first, I used 2/3 cup of breadcrumbs. But the resulting batter was too sticky to shape into tots. So I added another egg and 1/3 cup of breadcrumbs to the batter and mixed well. It was still sticky, but at least I was able to shape them into tots.
First I lined my baking sheet with a parchment paper and brushed the paper with oil. I took about 2 tablespoons batter in hand and shaped the batter into a cylindrical shape and placed the tot on the plate. Repeated the same process till all batter finished. I made 28 broccoli tots.
I had preheated the oven to 400 F already. Place the baking tray inside the oven. First time I checked at 15 minutes. They were stuck to the baking sheet. I put the tray back for another five minutes. It was still tough to flip them on the other side. Some of them broke. Somehow I flipped all of them and placed the tray back into the oven for next 15 minutes.
After fifteen minutes, I took the tots out and served with tomato sauce.
How was it?
Broccoli tots tasted delicious. Just not what I was expecting. I expected them to be crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They were soft on the inside but not that crispy from the outside. They tasted like the veg kabab my mother used to make. One thing was sure, broccoli’s taste was masked by the seasonings and cheese. We loved them and finished them quickly. The tots tasted awesome with tomato sauce. I would definitely make them again. Maybe put the batter in the fridge for some time to lessen the moisture so that it becomes easy to shape it into tots.
For the next time
I would love to try other variations of these tots
