It’s six in the morning,
The alarm bell is ringing,
Switching it off
I go back to sleeping,
I open my eyes,
Sit up suddenly,
It’s seven in the morning,
And We are still sleeping!
I quickly get up,
make some tea,
Asking my husband to get ready,
I hook upon a decision
To make Upma of Semolina,
Having mustard seeds
peanuts included,
Seasoning with green chillis,
Finally some salt,
Garnishing with leaves of coriander…
Semolina Upma is something which got recently added to our breakfast menu. My husband loves it totally. It is quick and easy to make. So I also love it. Now we have it for breakfast almost once every week. I had tasted different versions of this upma at our relatives and friends places, which led me to finally try it in my kitchen. This recipe is made in a lot of ways. I tried a few and settled on this one.

- 1 tsp split Bengal Gram (chana dal)
- 1 tsp mustard seeds

- 1 onion finely chopped
- 2 green chillis finely chopped
- 1/4 cup finely chopped coriander leaves
- 2 tsp oil

Instructions
- Heat the oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds.
- When the mustard seeds start to crackle, add peanuts, urad split and split bengal gram. Saute them till they turn golden brown in color. The heat should be medium, else they will burn quickly.
- Add curry leaves, onion, and green chilies. Saute them till they start turning light brown.
- Add water and coriander leaves and wait for it to start boiling.
- Next add semolina, simultaneously mixing to avoid clumps. Add salt and mix well.
- Turn the heat to slow. Mix till the semolina absorbs all the water. The upma will have a paste-like consistency. Close the burner. Put on the lid over the pan.
- Open and serve hot after 5 minutes.

Semolina Upma
The soft semolina dissolves completely as soon as it enters the mouth, combined with the nutty flavor of peanuts and pulses, resulting in a yummylicious serving. The whole process of cooking this takes under 15 minutes. So you get a quick, healthy, stomach filling breakfast. Like we say in Hindi : “Pet hi nahi, balki mann bhar ke khana” Enjoy..!!
